Two things that I enjoy most about pregnancy are listening to the baby’s heartbeat and feeling the baby move. While it’s too early to feel movement, I was looking forward to my doctor’s appointment last week in anticipation of hearing his or her heartbeat for the first time. Little did I know that baby had other plans. The doctor was unable to detect a heartbeat so she told me to wait (and relax…yeah right) until the room with the ultrasound machine was vacant. It’s one thing to tell a mom to relax and another thing to do it.
Just minutes earlier I was sitting in the waiting room and passing the time catching up on Facebook. One friend had posted these verses as his status: “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.” (2 Cor 1:3-5) I remember finding comfort in the passage as I read it then and again as I waited for my ultrasound.
After waiting about ten minutes (and in the meantime texting Adam – I didn’t want to be alone) I finally switched rooms. The doctor and I were relieved to see a very healthy heart beating on the monitor! Everything looked great. It’s amazing to see the growth that occurred in just three weeks. Growth is beginning to show on the outside too. I have a definite baby bump. Unfortunately, my hips are beginning to protrude too. It’s a pity considering how much running I’ve done over the past seven years to rid myself of those darn birthing hips.
