Surviving Spring Break

Five more days…till my kids go back to school.  I’ve mentioned before that Megan and Paul attend a year-round school.  They work hard for one trimester at time and reap the reward of extended breaks in between.  Their spring break began the week before Easter.  And let me tell you, three weeks is a long time for working parents whose closest family and friends (i.e. babysitters) live over 2000 miles away.  For us, that meant transporting a babysitter.  Cathie, a family friend, flew from Albany, New York to spend one week with us in San Diego.  Megan and Paul adored the extra attention.  Sadly, it wasn’t “sunny San Diego” the week that Cathie arrived but we still managed to have a good time – swimming at the Kroc Center, being awed by the sea creatures at Birch Aquarium and walking the boardwalk by the beach.   The week went by all too fast but it was great to have Cathie around for even a short time.

When we haven’t had a babysitter, Adam and I have traded off working from home.  We are both thankful for jobs where we can make this happen.  Two days this week we couldn’t make it happen so we had a friend from our small group babysit.  They went swimming on Monday and went to see the Disney Earth movie on Wednesday.  Plus, in honor of Earth Day, our friend brought flower pots to paint and seeds to plant.  I wish I were on spring break!

With school resuming on Tuesday, Adam decided to end spring break with a bang.  Yesterday he surprised the kids by announcing that he would take them to Sea World today.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen the kids so giddy.  The most surprising thing was how much both kids knew about Sea World.  We are all Sea World newbies but I guess the kids have heard stories at school.  So while I went off to work today, two excited kids and the father of the year traipsed off to Sea World.  I’ve been depending on twitter reports to keep on eye on them.  The most exciting report so far was that they were able to pet a dolphin.  I can’t wait for them to return so I can hear their stories.

It is 4pm and they are not back yet.  I’m going to foot it to Starbucks for a little treat of my own.  By the way, if any of the aforementioned family and friends desire to spend their summer in San Diego exchanging room and board for childcare, please let me know!
