General Mills Shout-Out

Cinnamon Toast CrunchI’m thoroughly enjoying the comments at my “Sweet & Simple” Honey Kix Giveaway.  It’s good to know that I’m not alone in my love of cereal.  I’m reminded that if it were not for the cereal dispensers in my college cafeteria, I would have gone hungry.  Cereal and sandwiches sustained me!

My kids are every bit the cereal monsters that I am.  When you think about it, cereal is more healthy than most snacks my kids would otherwise choose to eat.  I’d much rather pour my kids a bowl of cereal than hand them a bag of cookies or chips to snack on.  That’s why I didn’t mind a bit when General Mills also sent me a sample box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch.  The only problem with cereal that I can think of is that it does not last very long in our house.  Case in point, our box didn’t last more than two days!

The Grow Up Strong website makes a good case for why cereal is a healthy option.  Some examples are:

  • Ready to eat cereal is the number one source of whole grains in kids’ diets
  • 9 out of 10 kids are still not getting the daily recommended three servings (48 grams) of whole grain.
  • Most cereals have about 100-130 calories per serving and at least 10 key nutrients.
