Memoirs from Africa: 2 Books I Recommend

by Kristen McLane on February 19, 2009

I’ve just finished reading two African memoirs: The House at Sugar Beach: In Search of a Lost African Childhood by Helene Cooper and Tears of the Desert: A Memoir of Survival in Darfur by Halima Bashir.

The House at Sugar Beach
Besides being an interesting memoir, this book helped me understand more about the history of Liberia.

Tears of the Desert
Although it was more painful to read, Tears of the Desert was my favorite of the two books. It is a must read for anyone concerned about woman’s rights and justice. It was especially interesting to me in relation to the many African refugees I cross paths with here in San Diego; I can’t help wondering about their story.

I loved Out of Africa and Shadows on the Grass but Cold Comfort Farm? Not so much. Liked Heart of Darkness though. Those are my only African books I think.
