Fortune Fail

Fortune FailI meant to share this a couple weeks ago when it actually would have been appropriate for Chinese New Year.  My co-worker ordered Chinese take-out and she received this fortune cookie – which as you can see, is half missing!  I’m thinking it’s the opposite of fortune.

Speaking of Chinese New Year….

One thing I love about Megan and Paul’s school is the cultural diversity.  While the majority of their classmates are Hispanic, there are a variety of cultures represented (Vietnamese, African, Indian).  Chinese New Year was emphasized all week in the kid’s classrooms.  They learned how to say “gung how fat choy” (happy new year) and of course, their favorite lesson was learning about red envelopes.  (Believe me, I had to hear all Megan’s Vietnamese girlfriend who received over $100.00 in her red envelope.)

To follow up their new found excitement for all things oriental, Adam and I took the kids downtown to the 2009 Chinese New Year Food and Cultural Faire.  We all enjoyed watching martial arts performances and dragon dancing.  Paul’s favorite activity was the craft tent where he and Megan made paper lanterns.  My favorite part was sampling food from the street vendors.  We ordered a few dishes to share as a family.  I was amazed when Megan and Paul chowed down on a heaping plate of lo mein and declared it “the best thing ever.” (I didn’t dare mention that there was cabbage in the dish!)  Seriously, the kid’s would never have eaten the same dish at home.

I’ve discovered they eat cabbage (spinach, etc) if you juice it and drown it with enough apple juice. lol. That’s how we keep Gracie’s iron level high enough since she absolutely refuses every vegetable native to earth!
