My Adopted African Family

A January 2008 IRC survey found that 5,400,000 people have died from war-related causes in Congo since 1998 – the world’s deadliest documented conflict since WW II. The vast majority died from non-violent causes such as malaria, diarrhea, pneumonia and malnutrition—easily preventable and treatable conditions when people have access to health care and nutritious food. San Diego is home to an estimated 100,000 refugees who are survivors of war and oppression in their countries. Last night our community group “adopted” a refugee family of six (including baby on the way). Our adopted family relocated to San Diego from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Last night we met the father, Prime. This evening we are meeting the rest of his family at their house. While none of our community group members speaks Swahili, I am confident that the language of love will speak volumes.

What a wonderful thing to do! I bet they are so appreciative for all the help.
