Lucha Libre Gourmet Taco Shop, San Diego

by Kristen McLane on November 24, 2008

Last Saturday the family ate lunch at a fun little taco shop here in San Diego. Adam had eaten there once before with his co-workers and he knew that I would enjoy it too. We are always on the lookout for restaurants “off the beaten path”. The name is the first indication that Lucha Libre is not your mama’s taco shop. Colorful artwork depicting masked lucha libre wrestlers greets visitors as they enter the restaurant. It’s the sort of place that makes even decidedly uncool folks like myself feel cool.

The decor was fun but I wondered if the food would live up to the hype. It turns out that I had nothing to fear. I ordered a shrimp taco “pro meal” and a side of TJ Corn. In retrospect, one taco would have filled me up! One of their more unique menu items is the TJ Hotdog (all beef hotdog wrapped in bacon; topped with ketchup, mustard, mayo and grilled onions). The food was fresh and tasty and the right price. Our family of four ate for under $20. If you live in San Diego or if you are planning a visit, Lucha Libre Gourmet Taco Shop should be on your list of places to go.

Yum! Sounds like a fun place! My husband and I always try to stop in at taco shops when we’re on the coast (CA, WA, etc.) because fish is just so much better where you are. Fresh fish tacos are such a treat!
