“no mom”
One of my favorite developmental stages with Megan was when she was learning how to write and sound out words. Megan’s interest in writing (storytelling in particular) came naturally and all I ever had to do was encourage her. Her kindergarten teacher and I would regularly share a laugh over Megan’s zany journal entries.
Paul’s writing process has been slower. As a preschooler he showed more interest in numbers than letters (numbers are good too). Up until the start of kindergarten last month Paul’s writing was limited to his name. It’s not that Paul isn’t bright, he just wasn’t interested. Then something clicked and Paul recognized the power of the written word. It started with “no” - two letters communicating a firm message. Paul made a sign with the word “no” repeating line after line. He held it up one night to tell me that “no,” he wasn’t going to bed. Not long after that Paul began stringing words. “No” became “no mom” and it was accompanied by another piece of paper with the words, “yes Paul.” See, I told you he was clever.
