Weekend Update: Las Vegas Edition

We are back from our weekend escape to Las Vegas. The purpose of our trip was to visit Adam’s mom. Now that we are only a five hours drive from Vegas our intention is to visit more often.

Grammy (and her husband Rick) have a thing for Yorkshire Terriers. Two of their Yorkies are show dogs. On Saturday we tagged along to our first ever dog show. It was miserably hot (98 degrees - and it was an outdoor show) but the Yorkies did their thing and brought home a few awards including a “best of breed.”

The kid’s reward for patiently waiting all day in the sun was to go swimming in Grammy’s pool. It was nice to have an entire pool to ourselves. Later in the evening Adam and I had a date. Grammy lives a mile from the strip so it made sense to go in that direction. I’ve been to Vegas a few times and this time the strip felt a lot trashier than ever before. Maybe it was because it was later in the evening than we have normally gone? Here are a few of the Vegasisms that we observed:

  • To be a female walking down the strip you must dress up and wear high heels. Dress up literally translates into “dress less.”
  • It is perfectly acceptable (normal even) to walk down the street with a cocktail in one hand and a cigarette in the other. Leave your glass on the ground when you are finished.
  • When you see a photo opportunity stop where you are and ask a stranger to take a picture. The wall to wall stream of people behind you can wait.
  • Forget the babysitter and bring the kids. We left the strip around 11:30 pm and parents were walking around with their wide-awake toddlers.

I’m happy because I got to see my fountain show at the Bellagio. Yes, I know it’s cheesy but I love the dancing fountains. The Vegas strip doesn’t hold much appeal to me. The one reason that I would go back is to see a show. Next time I have more than two days notice I will be scouting out tickets on Craigslist. I’ve always wanted to see the Cirque du Soleil.
