Just before moving to San Diego my brilliant husband decided that we needed a GPS for the car. At the time I didn’t understand why he would choose to spend his hard earned cash (a gift from George Bush actually) on a GPS of all things. I half-heartily agreed even though I didn’t see the usefulness. Adam researched our options and a few days later she arrived. We named her Fergie.
Flash forward a few months later and Fergie and I are the best of friends. I truly believe that I would have been hopelessly lost here if not for Fergie’s kind yet firm instruction, “Turn around when possible…” She has also provided hours of entertainment for the children. They enjoy mimicking her British accent and creating their own nonsensical directions. Very rarely has Fergie failed me.
Something else has changed partly as a result of Fergie in my life. I used to be deathly afraid of driving on the highway. Would you believe that I lived in Chicago for eight years without driving on a single highway? I was that timid. When I lived in Michigan I drove on the highway but only when it was necessary. Now that I live in San Diego I drive on the highway nearly everyday. And it’s no big deal. I think that it helps to have Fergie in the car. No matter where I am I can count on Fergie to lead me home again.
Fergie, I’d be lost without you.

Before we got our GPS, I was completely freaked out about driving on the freeway. I literally have small anxiety attacks, my heart starts beating fast, my palms are all sweaty. And I worried about getting lost. But now that we have our GPS, I relax a little. I’m not as freaked out as I used to be. I haven’t named ours yet, maybe Maggie, short for Magellan.
We love our GPS although we don’t have a name for her yet. Don’t get too complacent and run off any piers though. I once got lost with it in my very own home town going to a play date! Sounds like a blog post to me…
