I Spy + Memory = Fun

by Kristen McLane on August 3, 2008

The I Spy Memory Game from Briarpatch combines award-winning I Spy picture riddles with the classic game of Memory. I recently had the opportunity to review the I Spy Memory Game with Megan (7) and Paul (4). Both children are big fans of I Spy books from Scholastic so I was eager to see how the game would stack up.

There are several ways to play the I Spy Memory Game. Megan, Paul and I have mostly been playing the traditional Memory matching game. The I Spy Memory Game comes with 60 memory cards (30 pairs) and 15 riddle cards. Sometimes when Paul and I play we use half the amount of memory cards to keep the game moving more quickly. There are a total of 8 suggested game variations to choose from depending on the player’s age and abilities.

What I like most about the I Spy Memory Game are the pictures. There are no cartoony cards covered in generic clip art - only colorful and creative pictures as seen in the I Spy books. And no two cards are exactly the same. The idea is to find cards with main objects that match. I like that this adds a little extra challenge for the brain. I have a feeling this game will be around as a favorite in our family for a long time.

What a great gift idea for Christmas - my boys would love this game, as they love looking at our I Spy books.

We LOVE the I Spy matching game. We simplified it when my son was 2 with the cards face up and only a few pairs out at a time. Now that he’s 4, I think we’ll give it a go with more of them out and having them face-down for the memory challenge - assuming we can keep the little sister’s curious fingers out of the way. Nothing like a little extra challenge, right?!
