Surviving Summer

Surviving summer. It sounds so dramatic doesn’t it? Megan has been out of school for one full week and that week has gone by awful quick. Many other nearby districts end their school year today. For Megan, the last day of school came right on time. As one of her writing assignments Megan had to write a sentence for each day of the week. For “Friday” Megan had written, “On Friday I get sick.” It’s true that the Friday before Megan had feigned illness to get out of going to school. Her first grade field trip had been the day before so Adam and I knew that Megan was actually tired (not sick). Instead of giving her the day off from school we let her go in an hour later. By that time she had woken up more and was in a better mood. We all knew then that we were ready for school to be over.

I’ve already read blog horror stories about the first week of summer vacation…stressed out parents, siblings fighting with each other and the dreadful words, “Mommy, I’m bored!” (or as Paul says, “What can I do?”). I am pleased to report that we have only experienced the normal level of sibling battles and boredom. I know, the summer is still young! So to all those who are well into summer vacation and to all those who are crossing the finish line today, Happy Summer!

This is our first official summer vacation, as my son’s preschool finished yesterday. I’m hoping that we can keep plenty busy with visits to a variety of parks, playdates with friends, visits to the Farmer’s Market, outdoor music events and just some good ol’ sandbox play in the backyard.

Am I being naeive to think that we’ll be able to fend off the summer boredom? I’m new at this, so I guess we’ll just take it one day at a time and see how it goes.

Happy Summer!

I don’t want to echo those horror stories but it has been a tough couple weeks –the kids are bored already and I’m treatening to take every toy they own away if they don’t find a way to do SOMETHING.
