“Missing A Breath”

I just finished reading a new novel called The Outcast by Sadie Jones. Overall the book was interesting but it failed to fully capture my imagination. There were many thought provoking character studies and a few disturbing scenes (with similar dysfunctional qualities as in another recent read, The Thirteenth Tale).

There were a few quotes in the book that I absolutely loved. For example the main character, a child named Lewis, has a close bond with his mother, Elizabeth. The author writes,

“Elizabeth loved him and missed a breath with loving him.”

Isn’t that a beautiful quote? I’ve often felt this way but I’ve never been able to express it so succinctly. What words would you use to describe the love between you and your children?
