Does Anyone Know The Expiration Date For Canned Salmon?
It began as a joke. When Adam and I were newlyweds we bought a few cans of salmon. Adam insisted that every good pantry required a back-up (ie. something inexpensive and easy to prepare and otherwise referred to as “d-list” pantry food.) We consumed all but one can of salmon which sat by it’s lonesome in the back of our cupboard. When we moved out of that apartment we couldn’t bear to throw out our beloved can of Pillar Rock Pink Salmon. Because you never know when the mood for canned salmon might strike.
Fast forward ten years, two kids and four moves later. Different cupboard; same can of salmon. As we prepare to move to San Diego the question that looms is, “Will the salmon travel to San Diego? (It’s already been to California and back once before.) I have a feeling that our dusty old can will be making the trip. As much out of stubborness as for sentimental reasons.

Our salmon is lonely no more. Joining the salmon are two cans of Spam (left over from a youth group game) and one can of Celebrity Lunch Tongue packed in Jelly (canned pork tongue). Adam insisted on bringing that back from Northern Ireland the first time he visited.
I looked up the expiration date for canned salmon tonight and found out the shelf life of Pillar Rock Pink Salmon is six years from the production date. After deciphering the code on the lid I figured out the production date was July 17th, 1998. On second thought the salmon might be staying here in Michigan. It is good to know that it was fresh when we bought it…ten years ago! The Spam has a fighting chance. As a missionary kid I’ve had my fill of Spam, powdered milk and canned processed cheese. However, I’m intrigued by this recipe for Spam Sushi.

Hilarious! My husband and children, however, being true Spam connoisseurs (against my will!) would probaly not appreciate the humor. They prefer their Spam pan fried with a side of grease and slapped on a sandwich–a culinary catastrophe and a nutritional nightmare!

Interestingly enough, Tim brought an identical can of canned salmon into our marriage. I believe it is out of sight in the back of our current pantry with an equally old can of lima beans… I’d bet they are both also considered out of date. Happy eating!

I wonder how many expired cans of salmon are sitting in people’s cupboards and why can’t we bring ourselves to throw them out?

That was a big thing in Hawaii - Spam Sushi! I never did try it (I was too distracted by the rest of the tasty sushi), but I hear it’s good.
