Explaining the Resurrection to Children (& Giveaway)

Easter can be a confusing time of the year for children. Eggs, candy and the Easter Bunny overshadow the true reason for celebrating Easter. As a parent I look for creative ways to communicate the importance of Christ’s death on the cross and His resurrection. Had these events not occurred there would be no reason to celebrate.

fl_9066.jpgOne popular method of teaching the Easter story is through Resurrection Eggs. Resurrection Eggs are colorful plastic eggs filled with objects that symbolize parts of the Easter story. Ann Kroeker has a wonderful post on her blog with a description of Resurrection Eggs and creative uses of them. I have my own set of Resurrection Eggs that I use with my kids. They ask for it every year at Easter time.

A great accompaniment to Resurrection Eggs is a book for preschoolers called The Story of the Resurrection Eggs in Rhyme & Song. The book is set up so that children can open Resurrection Eggs while the story is being read. The simple yet engaging rhymes communicate the Easter story without skimping on the integrity of the message. I bought the book at the same time I purchased my set of Resurrection Eggs. I love how the book also communicates the gospel in a way that kids can understand. An alternative resource is Miss Patty Cake: Eggstravaganza which is basically the book set to dvd. Preschoolers will love singing along with Miss Patty Cake and children their own age. My kids recently had a chance to watch Miss Patty Cake’s Egg-Strava-Ganza and my four year old son asked to watch it over and over. My six year old daughter joined in to dance to the songs.dvds_eggstravaganza_sm.jpg

Win It! Easter Sunday has come and gone but the Easter message is true all year long. I have one brand new copy of Miss Patty Cake’s Egg-Strava-Ganza (DVD) to giveaway. Enter by commenting with your favorite Easter tradition. The giveaway will end at 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 29th. I will notify the winner via e-mail.

Great reviews–I hope people enjoy the leading up to Easter with anticipation and joy with resources like these.

Don’t include me in the giveaway–let someone else enjoy it–but obviously we love the Resurrection eggs (Kroeker-expanded edition). We also love going to the church services–Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and then Easter Sunday.

Thanks for stopping by! I’ve seen the resurrection eggs before, but didn’t know about the dvd. I’m officially entering myself in your giveaway.. Can’t wait!

I have never heard of Resurrection eggs, but would love to add this to our traditions every year. One of my all time fav traditions for Easter…is an Easter tree. My mom and I did one every year as I was growing up and I have added this with my girls as well. We hang the plastic eggs on it and that is basically it. I did do something a little special this year and did one in doors. I bought a wooden cross and a couple of wooden decorated eggs to go around the base of it….I hope I win this!!

Greetings! What a delightful giveaway contest. I have heard of both of these fun Easter items. Our family loves “Miss Patty Cakes!” I like your idea that they are not just for Easter, but can be used within the family year rounds. Please enter me in your drawing. I appreciate it…..Thanks,Cindi

Thanks for the tools to help me teach my young one about the truth about Easter.

We use the resurrection eggs, though we’re not quite at that level of understanding yet. Other traditions include time with family and worshipping together. Next year we plan to celebrate the coming new season of Spring with our egg hunts, bunnies & chicks; preserving the Easter celebration with 100% focus on Christ – His death, burial & resurrection.

Thanks for hosting!

I love the idea of the Resurrection eggs – I MUST do that next year!

My favorite tradition right now is coloring eggs and making an Easter cake each year.

Thanks for the chance to win the DVD!

I used these Resurrection eggs for the first time this year. The kids in Children’s church were entralled & I’ve never seen them sit so still through a story. I’ll have to check out the preschool book. That sounds like a great resource. We colored eggs @ Grandma Voth’s & never did it @ home this year. The kids would love to color eggs, even though Easter is officially over. Great idea.

This is an awesome giveaway. We had the Resurrection Eggs at our last Bible Study and the kids did great answering all the quesions, but my daughter only 2 and the youngest had a difficult time. Maybe the video would be more helpful to someone so young.

My first experience using resurrection eggs was on a mission trip to Japan. We went over Easter, so we used the eggs with adults in English classes. It is an incredible way to share the truth of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ- and it doesn’t really matter what the age!
I used them again on Easter sunday when I did the children’s message during the church service. God has definitely gifted me with a desire to teach kids, but I don’t have the same confidence with adults! So, even though I was teaching the kids, I was aware of the 100 or so adults who were watching! It was great to have something so simple to work through and for those adults who were they that do not know Christ, it may have been the thing that made sense.
All that to say- the eggs are a great tool in sharing the gospel! May God continue to receive the glory!!!!

The California church I used to go to used the resurrection eggs with the kids, but I don’t believe that our Arizona church did. I would love to enter this contest to expose my kids to to truth of Easter in a more kid friendly way. I know my 4yo son is now fascinated with the idea of rising from the dead and asks me if God ever lets the birds and fish come back to life.

My favorite Easter tradition is the big family meal. Since getting married and moving away, I have missed it terribly, but this year my sister and her family moved to our town and we were able to have the big egg hunt in my backyard and watch our kids running around looking for the “special egg” that says “Jesus Loves You”
