Growing Readers: Final Thoughts & Two More Book Giveaways

growingreaders.jpgWow, what a week! It has been a joy to write about a topic that I feel so passionately about. I know I’ve only covered the surface but sadly the week has come to an end. I must say goodbye for now to the Growing Readers series.

My favorite part of the week has been reading the comments and book recommendations. I love exchanging ideas with so many like-minded individuals. As I stated at the beginning of the series, I’m not a literacy expert, I’m just a mom wanting to pass on her love of reading to her children. After such a great week, I feel it is only appropriate to go out with a bang. Of course I’m talking about two more book giveaways.0761141227.jpg

Camp Out!: The Ultimate Kids’ Guide by Lynn Brunelle is packed with everything you need to know for camping outdoors -

Bear bags, wilderness showers, and telling the temperature by counting the cricket chirps… Whether you’re planning an over night in the backyard or a weekend in the wilderness, this book is packed with stuff to know. The basics, from gearing up to choosing a site to building a tarp tent. Tasty outdoor recipes: Solar Oven Pizza, Chow Down Chili and s’ more’s of course—with 8 variations.
Plus: how to keep a Field Journal, exploring the nighttime sky, creepy campfire stories, and when it’s time to go home, leaving no trace. It’s everything you need to pick up and head for the hills. (Workman Publishing)

9780761144298.jpgHow Come? In the Neighborhood by Kathy Wollard is perfect for the budding scientist in the family. How Come? answers everyday mysteries such as how can a fly or bug walk up a wall and why do we have eyebrows? The book contains 134 questions and answers about our everyday world.

Win It! I have one copy of Camp Out! and one copy of How Come? to giveaway. Enter by commenting which book you would like to receive and why. The giveaway will end at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 25th. I will notify the two winners via e-mail.

Don’t forget to enter my Gallop! and Humpty Who? book giveaways.

I would like to win the How Come? book. This is a book I would like to win- because as a science teacher- it’s sometimes difficult to come up with interesting topics/ lessons that interest both boys/girls. So, if you think about it- if I win this book, I will be sharing it with hundreds and hundreds of children over the years- not only that, I will be sharing the love of science.
Now- that’s a gift!!!

Wow, those are two great books. My oldest daughter (almost 9) would love either one. She loves Science, learning why things are the way they are and how things work. She would also love the Camp Out book. She loves being outside, and we did go camping alot up until recently. Hard choice….I am gonna go with the Camp Out book! Just for her love of being out doors and camping!

Hey there, I stopped in to say thanks so much for these great book giveaways you do! I’m loving your site. And mainly to say thanks for the last giveaways since I won them! And when I get here, there’s another giveaway…

So if you don’t wanna count my submission here that’s fine, I just came to say thanks!

We would love the ‘how come’ book. We haven’t reached the stage of questions yet, other than ‘why’… but I know it’s coming! Wonderment about the world is one of children’s greatest gifts, I love to see it.

5 Dianna K. Ball March 23, 2008 at 7:55 am

Oh man, this would be perfect for my almost-five-year-old nephew. He is SUCH a budding scientist and is so inquisitive. And he’s just not the kind of kid you can give a fluff answer to, so I end up saying “I don’t know” way way too often. This would be a great win for us.

whoops…so, if it wasn’t obvious, I would love to enjoy the How Come book. Sorry that wasn’t in my other post!

9 tally March 23, 2008 at 11:15 pm

I’d love How Come only because we are such homebodies we never get to go camping!

10 Cindi March 23, 2008 at 11:17 pm

Greetings! How fun. Children’s books are fun. I was going to choose the “How Come?” book because my son is a science/
engineer child taking after his dad! It looks like most of the bloggers thus far.would like to win it, also! Camping would work, also, just not quite as much. Thanks for the opportunity for a chance to win a delightful children’s book. Please enter me in your drawing. Have a great week…..Cindi

My son would love either, but if I have to choose, I would pick Camp Out, because he is ULTRA-excited to go camping this summer and show his new baby brother the ropes! :)

I would love to get a copy of ‘Camp Out!’ because we are always going camping out on the family land. My daughter could definitely use the book. Great giveaway, thanks!

13 Sarah March 24, 2008 at 12:02 am

Absolutely I’d love the “How Come?” book. I don’t know how many times I’ve heard that in my life… from my nieces and nephews… and my daughter only says a few words yet, so I know I’ll hear it a lot!

14 Jessie R. March 24, 2008 at 12:34 am

I would love the “How Come?” book because my daughter is so inquisitive about life and loves to explore!

15 Noreen March 24, 2008 at 1:30 am

I would love How Come? since my daughter asks that all day!!

16 Carmen March 24, 2008 at 4:48 am

How Come would be great for my curious preschooler, but we’re into camping as well. Either book would be a treasure. :o ) Thanks for hosting!

17 Peter March 24, 2008 at 7:28 am

I think I’d have to be a fan of the “Camp Out” book. Our daughter has a love for the outdoors that we want to encourage and I know she’d love to go camping again.

18 Susan Chester March 24, 2008 at 8:09 am

I am hoping to pass my love of reading to my grandchildren. Sadly none of my 3 kids like to read. I would prefer to win the How Come book for my 7 year old grandson. He asks questions constantly!

19 Lo March 24, 2008 at 8:11 am

I would love to win the How Come book for our son. He is young now, but we plan to raise a curious boy like his mama. :-)

20 Judy Aschenbrenner March 24, 2008 at 8:39 am

We would put the Camp Out book to great use at our house!

21 Naomi March 24, 2008 at 8:39 am

I’d love either, but maybe the Camp Out book would be a better resource since I’ve never been camping… I could read up on it for the kids so my husband won’t be the only authority!

22 Julie Mead March 24, 2008 at 10:15 am

We NEED the ‘how come’ book! My son needs an explanation for everything!

23 Patti March 24, 2008 at 10:17 am

We’d love the Camp Out book! We’ve been talking a lot about going camping this summer since our kids are old enough now! They’d love this book!

24 artsweet March 24, 2008 at 10:17 am

Would love camp out! I want to share my love of camping with my son.

25 Ellie March 24, 2008 at 10:33 am

What a difficult choice! I would really like either one, but with summer coming up I’d probably go with the Camp Out book.

26 divrchk March 24, 2008 at 11:48 am

I’d love the How Come book.

27 Stephanie V March 24, 2008 at 11:54 am

How come? because my little boy is so curious already.

28 JenO March 24, 2008 at 12:12 pm

The camp out book would be better for me. I teach science already and have lots of resources for the how come and why questions I can never escape from. :)

Thanks for hosting!

I would love to win the Camp Out!: The Ultimate Kids’ Guide as we’re going camping this summer and my kids would love this!
Thanks for the give away.

31 Jennifer P. March 24, 2008 at 2:25 pm

Both look great, but I think How Come would be more appropriate for my girls at their current ages.

32 Heather March 24, 2008 at 2:50 pm

I would love the Camp Out because I love camping and hope to pass that on to my daughter. Thanks!

33 Tess-mom of 4 March 24, 2008 at 2:59 pm

I would love to get the “How Come?” book-all of my children want to know things about the world that I don’t know the answer to-it would be fun to have this book to refer to in those times…it may even accompany us to the park and on trips just to help answer those how come questions :)
thanks for a great giveaway!

34 Maeflower March 24, 2008 at 3:50 pm

How come …we need it. There are so many things for my daughter to ask about and understand, and I sure don’t have the anwers…

35 Stephanie March 24, 2008 at 5:59 pm

Both books sound fun, but I’m especially intrigued by the Camp Out! title. We’ll be taking our 18-month-old daughter camping for the second time this May and it would be fun to involve her in the “planning” process a little more. :)

36 denise March 24, 2008 at 8:11 pm

My almost 3 year old twins can’t wait to go camping. We went twice last year & hope to go more this year. They would love the camping book!! Thanks!

37 Meg March 24, 2008 at 9:41 pm

We’d need the “How Come?” book for sure…my 3-1/2 year old son is chock full of questions all the time. :0) Sometimes I just can’t answer them all!

38 Belinda March 24, 2008 at 10:59 pm

I’d love to win the copy of Camp Out for my son. He’s really getting interested in the outdoors. We are taking him on a camping trip two weeks from now….should be fun. Thanks
for the chance!

39 Brooke March 25, 2008 at 8:05 am

How Come in the Neighborhood is what I want. I have no idea how to answer some of the ENDLESS questions and this could really help.

40 Lindsie March 25, 2008 at 9:05 am

Definately the Camp Out book. We love camping!

41 sherry March 25, 2008 at 11:41 am

I would love to win the “Camp Out” book. Being in the outdoors is an important value and fun activity for our family. This would be a great way to get our kids acquainted with and excited about family camping trips.

42 Jason March 25, 2008 at 2:06 pm

Wow, what a tough choice. My 3yr old and 6yr old would benefit from either one. I guess since we have to choose I would say the “Camp Out” book since we will be going on many camping trips soon.

43 Lisa March 25, 2008 at 2:38 pm

How Come?, because I was just telling my husband that I’ll have to tell our son to go ask his dad why – I don’t know.
