Growing Readers: Thirteen Children’s Books That I Love

by Kristen McLane on March 19, 2008

growingreaders.jpgEveryone has a favorite children’s book. My husband’s favorite is Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. It is certainly a book that everyone can relate to! My list of favorites includes books that I love for purely sentimental reasons – they were read to me as a child or they are books that I read now to my own children. Some books are classics and some are brand new. It is impossible to narrow my list to thirteen favorites but for the sake of today’s Thursday Thirteen post I will try my hardest. For more children’s book recommendations see 100 Picture Books Everyone Should Know courtesy of the New York Public Library.

Aw, I remember reading so many of those to my kids! Now they are all growed up and I hope they will read those stories to my grandchildren!

I love ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ but was surprised when my daughter expressed fear after I read it to her! She surprises me sometimes with what scares her and what doesn’t. But that is one of the great things about reading- it can allow you to have different emotions, but in a safe way. Does that make any sense whatsoever? :)

Becky,

Well said! (It made perfect sense to me.)

Just read one of the Fancy Nancy books with Juliana. I loved how it was a vocabulary builder without her even knowing it!
