Growing Readers: Children’s Book Club
This summer a friend and I will be organizing a book club for our daughters. Our is going to be a mother-daughter book club. Besides that fact that my friend and I are readers and we want to help our daughters become readers, a mother-daughter book club sounded just plain fun to do. The mother/daughter members will take turns choosing books that are appropriate for the age group (1st and 2nd grade). During our club meetings we will read (if not too long) and discuss the book and do an activity to correspond with the book.
For example: Arnie, the Doughnut by Laurie Keller is a favorite book that my children have loaned from the library too many times to count. It is about Arnie, an enthusiastic young doughnut thrilled to be bought from the doughnut shop until he realizes that he is about to be eaten by his new “owner.” Arnie has to think fast in order to save himself.

A tasty activity would be to make donuts to eat. It would be easy enough to purchase plain donuts and provide chocolate icing and plenty of sprinkles to decorate like Arnie. Or follow this simple recipe to make your own baked donuts out of Pillsbury biscuit dough.
If real donuts aren’t your thing, make a craft an Arnie instead. Or follow these instructions to sew and decorate handmade felt donuts. Most importantly, have fun!

Oh gosh - Arnie has been a fave at our house for a long time! We love it! Don’t you just love her quirky humor? If you haven’t, you have to get Scrambled States of America and also Open Wide, Tooth School Inside. I love to read these over and over, too!

thanks!

I love this idea. We have never read the book. We’ll have to check it out from the library soon. Thanks.

Autumn and I were in a Mother/Daughter book club for years. It was a lot of fun. The girls took turns picking out books and mom’s took time hosting it. The first part of the book club was discussing the book, and maybe a craft. The last part was mom’s talking and the girls played. Sometimes Autumn and I read are books separately, but most often we read them together. It was a great time and many memories.

Barb, your mother-daughter book club is what inspired me to try my own. Crystal is the other mom who is going to help me. She is the detailed, organized planner so I think we will balance each other well. I’ve already had a few families from Megan’s school interested in joining us. I look forward to the social aspect of the club too.

I need to head to the library right now. That book sounds great! And although we connect personal situations to the fictional ones in the stories we read to our daughters, I don’t think we’ve purposely done something physical like that. Great idea; thanks!

I can’t wait to read more about your new mother daughter book club. And if you’re searching for ideas about books to read, activities for your meetings, and author interviews, visit http://www.motherdaughterbookclub.com when you get a chance.
It’s a resource for members of mother daughter book clubs as well as interested readers who aren’t in a club.
There are only a few recommendations from readers in the age group you’re starting with, and I’d love to hear about the titles you read and recommend so I can post them for others who are just starting out. And if any moms or daughters want to write a review on a book you read, I’d love to get it.
Good luck with your club. If you have any questions you can email me at info@motherdaughterbookclub.com. — Cindy Hudson

What a great idea! I started a “Book and a Snack” section on my blog and was wondering if you’d let me feature this? I love it!!
