Growing Readers

growingreaders.jpgThis week my blog is dedicated to Growing Readers. Did you know that March is National Reading Month? Elementary schools across the nation kicked off the month with a birthday celebration for Dr. Seuss. Dr. Seuss, whose books are best known for their rhymes and quirky characters, understood that reading should be fun. His books stir the imaginations of both the young and the young at heart.

One of my most enjoyable moments of parenting is reading with Megan (6) and Paul (4). I come from a family of readers. While my husband and I were dating he used to joke that a family outing always involved a trip to the bookstore or library. We made no apologies for the fact that reading was a vital part of our existence. During college I read less and less for pleasure. The large amount of required text reading zapped away some of my enthusiasm for books. Then with the births of my children, a whole new world of books opened up for me…children’s books.

Reading comes naturally to me. I do my best as a parent to make reading fun for my children as well. This week I will share some of my favorite books, resources and creative ideas. Monday will begin with a book review and giveaway to win books 1-3 from the Lucky Foot Stable Series by JoAnn S. Dawson. Throughout the week I will also feature several guest bloggers including my local librarian. I welcome your thoughts and ideas too. I don’t claim to be a literacy expert. I’m just a mom who wants to pass on her own love of books to her children and possibly inspire others along the way.

Thanks for celebrating reading and providing resources/tips/book recommendations to parents! I’m looking forward to the rest of the week!

I’m an avid reader, and my 2 1/2 year old loves for us to read to her as well (she memorizes some of the smaller books and then “reads” them to us, too). I’ll be checkin’ in all week long. Thanks!
