On Saturday we recorded our own McLane Family edition of This American Life. Adam has the recording equipment at home for making his Youth Ministry Exchange (YMX) podcasts. Two weeks ago Adam came up with the idea of recording the kids. At first they were reluctant. The equipment looked intimidating not to mention that our kids are experts at rolling their eyes when we want them to do something for us. We decided not to make a big deal over it. The first week Adam secretly interviewed Paul playing at the kitchen table. Paul is making sound effects and talking about his toy car. This week Adam lured the kids to the microphone using funky background noises and manipulating their voices. It wasn’t long before Megan warmed up enough to tell some silly stories and knock-knock jokes. Paul wanted in on the fun too. We recorded a few of his “Paulisms” that never fail to crack the family up. It is not necessarily what he says that is funny but how he says it. Perhaps one day I can post a few of his recorded phrases here on the blog. I love the recorded “snapshots” of my kids. They are changing quickly and this is one special way of preserving family memories.

This is a good reminder that I need to give the link to this to our folks! Oops.
That’s a good idea. I love listening to the old tapes my mom make while we were in Brazil to send to my grandparents. I recorded Abbie singing & talking back in the day before our video camera, and although the camera is wonderful, there’s something more natural & relaxing about listening to the sound of their voice, without so much activity going on.
I also plan to record myself reading some of the Megan and Paul’s favorite books. I agree that there is something special about listening to the voices and the noises in the room. Sometimes the visuals are distracting.
