To See Or Not To See

by Kristen McLane on January 15, 2008

I’ve seen a few good movies lately (and a few bad ones too). Here is what I’ve watched so far in 2008.

1) Adam and I kicked off the new year with I Am Legend. Let’s just say that it was not what we were expecting. It wasn’t an enjoyable experience considering that our hands were covering our faces for 90% of the movie. More than once Adam leaned over to me and whispered, “this isn’t funny.” I tolerate science fiction better than Adam but there were too many horror elements for me. The movie was not fun but dinner together at Texas Roadhouse (without kids in tow) made the evening not a total waste.

2) I was excited to bring Shrek 3 home from the library…and promptly fell asleep not even 30 minutes into the movie. Adam and I were in Northern Ireland when Shrek 3 was released in theaters and apparently we missed all the reviews telling us NOT to waste our time. Don’t waste your time either.

3) My next find at the library was The Namesake which happily was worth my time. This movie caught my eye because it was directed and produced by Mira Nair. And because I have a secret attraction to films about India (Monsoon Wedding) I decided to give it a try. The Namesake is a drama about a boy born in America to immigrant parents of Indian nationality and his struggle to accept his cultural identity while growing up in New York. Wrapped up in all the drama is a beautiful story about the love between a husband and wife, the love of parents for their children and the love of country – India.

4) Another great library find was You Kill Me. I was charmed by this dark comedy about a hit-man whose family sends him to rehab when his alcohol addiction interferes with his work. It’s not everyday that the hero of the story is a killer. You can read Adam’s review here.

5) Music and Lyrics was the latest in our string of dvd flicks. I was pleasantly surprised despite it being another typical Hugh Grant romantic comedy. The characters are quirky enough to be likable and the movie pokes fun at the pop music industry in a humorous way.

Great…the secret is out…it’s true…I just eat bon-bons (make that, M&Ms) all day long while I watch soap operas (I mean, Gilmore Girls). But Phil already knows that. The trick is picking up the entry way 5 minutes before he walks in so it looks like I actually got something accomplished!
