Kid Friendly Website: Starfall

by Kristen McLane on December 21, 2007

I first discovered Starfall last year when my daughter was in kindergarten. Starfall’s tagline is, Where children have fun learning to read! This is truly the best “learn to read” website that I have found. And it is free. Starfall’s target audience is first graders but even my four year old loves navigating this site. Preschoolers to second graders will find plenty of stories and activities to keep their interest. It is equally beneficial for my four year old who is still working on his ABC’s and my six year old who has already proven herself to becoming a great reader.

Starfall is a phonics based learning system. Kids are introduced to a sound followed by a short story using words with that sound. The site is simple but attractive with lots of color and cute illustrations. Kids can read silently or click on the words to hear them read with an emphasis on the sound. The website has many interactive features to keep my children’s interest. I also recently discovered many downloadable freebies for parents: reading and writing journals, “take-home” books, reading awards and printable activities.

Starfall is an A+ website. It is proof that education can be fun. My kids love it so much that they don’t even know that they are learning!
