My friend Gretchen has one of the most impressive photo collages that I have ever seen and she has agreed to let me share it with you. Perhaps her idea will inspire you to preserve your own family memories. (This would make a wonderful Christmas gift for a family member or special friend.)
Gretchen’s collage is prominently displayed in her kitchen where it is a constant source of conversation; especially for her children who enjoy asking questions about their relatives. The actual photo collage is approximately 3 ft. x 4 ft. Gretchen was resourceful and recycled an existing piece of outdated artwork as her work surface and frame.
The collage consists of 5 generations of relatives from Gretchen and her husband’s families dating from the early 1900′s to current day. Gretchen used original photos and reproduction photos (along with newspaper clippings) and positioned them on the surface to fit within the glass frame. She then used mod podge to secure and protect the photos. Finally Gretchen did what I think is one of the coolest parts of the project. She numbered all of the photos. To the left and right of the photo collage are shutters hung on the wall that showcase 8×10 frames with descriptions of each photo event in numerical order. Gretchen plans to pass the collage on to her own children some day so that they can add memories for the next generation of family.
This is an idea that I plan on stealing! I’m thinking of starting with a smaller travel collage to preserve favorite family vacation memories.
