Satisfiying a “Need” to Craft

I’ve been spending a lot of time lately looking at crafting and diy blogs.  I don’t consider myself a crafter although there was a time that I was an avid (and some would say talented) watercolorist and a time when I was passionate about working with stained glass.  While I would still like to think of myself as artsy, the truth is that I haven’t actually painted in years and my stained glass materials have never even been used in our "new" house.  Honestly I’m a little envious of all the cool handcrafted items I’ve seen at Etsy.  Last week I had the chance to satisfy a small bit of my crafting urge.

The project was created half out of neccesity and half for fun.  The idea hatched when Megan tripped on her way to school and tore a hole in the knee of her jeans.  Unable to throw away an otherwise perfect pair of jeans (that I had purchased just three months ago) I devised a plan to sew a handmade patch over the knee.  I should also mention that I don’t know how to use my sewing machine and I’m not exactly the best at hand-stitching.  Megan was enthusiastic about my plan and that was all the encouragement I needed to get started.

I’m pleased to announce that everyone is happy with the result.  I made my patch out of an old baby dress belonging to Megan.  It was stained and I’m not sure why I’ve been holding onto it for 5+ years but I found a good home for it on Megan’s knee.  I used crafting material that I already had at home so the project didn’t cost me any money (and saved me a pair of jeans).  In all the project cost me one afternoon of sewing.  Here are the pictures.
