Tribute To Dad
Father’s Day is coming up. I was thinking today of my own father. One of the greatest gifts that my dad has given me is perspective. My dad likes to say, "Hindsight is 20/20." My dad is a marathon runner. I like to run (much shorter) distances. As I ran my morning mile today I thought of what Paul wrote, "let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith." Paul’s epistles are scattered with imagery that an athlete would be familiar with. My dad likes to give me advice when we run together. One bit of advice is to determine a spot ahead of me to run towards. I am to focus my eyes on that spot. If I look down at my feet or around me, I am slowed down by distractions. And when the end is in sight, I am to sprint towards the finish, not slowing down until I cross the line. My dad lives out that same advice in his relationship with God. My dad knows that the distractions he encounters everyday do not measure up with "prize" of following Christ to the "finish line". Many people live their lives in search of the temporary rewards received along the way. My dad has taught me from how he lives his life, that the most valuable reward in life is a result of a life lived in obedience to Christ. Now that is perspective.
