End of the Spear
For our movie date last night Adam and I watched The End of the Spear. http://www.endofthespear.com It is not a movie that is likely to win any Acadamy Awards, but it is a movie worth seeing. As I reflect upon the story, I’m reminded of the book title, Circles of Blessing: Redemption in the Rainforest.
The story unfolding before our eyes is a story of grace and redemption. God’s story is interwoven with the story of Nate Saint, Steve Saint, the Woadani peoples and countless others whose lives are touched in this story. My father is fond of saying, "hindsight is 20/20". Often we cannot see God working in the details but we trust that He is. We are quick to thank God for the "good" things that happen to us but it is so much more a struggle to acknowledge God’s purpose in the "bad". Joseph understood. His brothers sold him into slavery and passed him off as dead but Joseph was able to say to them, (Genesis 50:19-20, The Message) "Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God? You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives." Five men dared to bring the message of God’s redemption to the Woadani tribe. They dared to break the cycle of fear and replace it with hope. They gave their lives. Many lives were saved.
